Key findings
In 2020, the number of suspected hate crimes reported to the police (n=852) decreased by 5 % as compared to the year 2019. Cases motivated by the victim’s religious background constituted 12.7 % of the incidents. The number of complaints of crimes targeting the victim’s religion or belief (n=108) declined by 19 % from 2019. Islam or Muslim individuals were targeted in 39 cases, which shows a 40 % drop from the figure (65) in 2019.
Methodology (Qualitative/Quantitative and exact type used, questionnaires etc)
The statistics are based on crime reports retrieved from the National Police Information System using hate crimes related search terms. All identified reports are read and classified based on the information found in the reports. For example, a case is considered a hate crime, when the victim, the police or a witness has expressed a suspicion of a potential hate motive behind the crime.
Sample details and representativeness
The 2020 report is based on a total of 825 reports of offences on suspected hate crime filed in the National Police Information System.
